Tribology, Material science & damage analysis

Besides our more service and product-oriented fields of business, the segment “material science & damage analysis” focuses on research in the field of friction, wear and lubrication: Tribology. Our goal is to gain new insights, and use the knowledge gained for product and process optimization.

Field of research

Our research focus lies on changes in near surface areas of friction partners inside a tribological system (Tribomutation). The results of such research are successfully used for the optimization of the manufacturing process, run-in procedures, and the development of lubricants.

Combining experiences and knowledge from engine development with state-of-the-art measuring equipment, precise predictions about initial friction and wear processes can be made. IAVF also cooperates with partners from universities and other research facilities to complement their mechanical findings with methods and techniques from surface science. Thus, information and insights about the chemical composition and chemical compounds can be gained.
